Final Day Video Blog: The Copenhagen Accord, Canada, and wrap-up of the week

How did Canada fare in the Climate Summit?
The UN Climate Summit has ended with a so-called “Copenhagen Accord.†The Canadian government seems satisfied but even Barack Obama, its American architect, openly calls it “not enough.†What does it all mean? (source www.zerocarboncanada.ca)
Highlights from the VBlog:
- Sudan said “this Document is murderous it condemns Africa. You’re asking us to sign on to a suicide pact”
- This is an agreement in which countries who are most at risk can’t help but take it personally
- For Canada I would offer that we need to be asking ourselves today if our government truly represented us in Copenhagen at this historic moment in time
In the polls the majority of Canadians wanted to see strong leadership at Copenhagen.
Meanwhile leaked documents this week showed that our federal government intended to weaken the emission targets.
“Canada is about to become even more unpopular. On Tuesday, leaked documents from the Harper administration indicated that the nation is considering even weaker emission reduction targets for fossil fuel industries. The documents suggest that the Tories plan to abandon a 2007 plan that called for cutting emissions from the oil and gas sectors by 48 megatonnes. A new proposal only calls for a 15 megatonne decrease—raising questions about whether the country could reach its stated pledge at Copenhagen of reducing emissions 20 percent by 2020.†(source motherjones.com)
At one point this week protesters stole a Canadian flag and drenched it in oil to make a statement.

At a provincial level our leaders are showing initiative, and from coast to coast individual citizens are working to change their lifestyles, lightbulbs and consumption habits. At a federal level the government’s refusal to make industry do it’s fair share is negating individual actions. Our federal government is not showing strong leadership in working towards solutions. The majority of our emissions in Canada come from heavy industry.
This doesn’t mean we should give up. Afterall we elect our government officials and they work for the people. We as citizens can continue to advocate for laws being changed in Canada.
Join PowerUp canada and invite your friends- we can support each other and work together to change our laws in Canada. We as a people working together can make a difference and work towards creating stronger laws and become an international leader and force for change (instead of a target for criticism).
Best wishes for the holiday season,
Rayne
